Hennessy was born in Edmonton, Alberta. John Hennessy worked as a meat seller and a marketing executive. The job involved lots of traveling, and the Hennessy family moved frequently. Her mother Maxine was a secretary who quit the family in 1982, leaving her daughter partially raised by her paternal grandmother Eleanor who lives in Kitchener Ontario. Her twin sister Jacqueline is an American journalist, while her older brother John Paul J.P. Hennessy Jr. was raised in Canada. Hennessy traces her ancestry to Irish French Swedish Italian on her father's side, as well as predominantly Ukrainian Roma along with Austrian from her mother's. She went to Stanley Park Senior Public School then was a graduate of Grand River Collegiate Institute in Kitchener Ontario and used to busk in her local Toronto subway. Hennessy began her acting career along with her sister on Dead Ringers, 1988.
